cerclé

French to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion line of clothes
I'm translating descriptions for a line of clothes, and the client chose not to provide any pictures or illustrations of the products. The word "cerclé" is used as follows (and these are just two examples):
- Chaussettes cerclées multicolore en coton peigné, pointe et talon contrastés, logo nœud papillon rose brodé sur cheville extérieure.
- Echarpe Homme cerclée bicolore.

I did a search using Google image, and I really can't tell the difference between "cerclé" and "á rayure". I've found "hooped socks", but I haven't seen hooped used with other articles of clothing. I've also seen ring pattern, but there weren't that many hits, so I don't know if it's accurate. Does anyone have any other ideas???

Now that I'm looking at this this morning with a less tired eye, it doesn't seem as complicated. I also finally found images of the client's products and it would appear that "cerclé" does indeed mean "horizontal striped" and "á rayures" vertical striped for this particular client. I think if the stripes were only on the front they would say something like "rayures uniquement devant" (not the best French, but you get the idea). I found "hoop stripe" as well, but really only for Rockport and Fred Perry. Thank you so much for the discussion, I really appreciate your input!

Hi Vicky - hoop v. stripes I agree with you - "hoop" is absolutely correct. I just wondered how natural it would sound. Mind you, you could say "multi-coloured hoop-striped socks" - that sounds OK doesn't it? It would certainly give a better image in the reader's mind. I'll add an "agree" to your suggestion - it was the duplicate posting that convinced me!

Hi Linda I understand it the same way - but this "continuous" stripe effect is described by the term "hoop" - ie a stripe that goes right around is a "hoop stripe". For me, "striped" on its own doesn't get this specific detail across. (See my refs belows)

"Cerclé" & "rayure" I looked at the link you posted and it seems to me that "cercler" means that the pattern is continuous - that is, front & back of the garment. I looked at another image & the stripe effect was only on the front with a different design on the back - "rayure". I did think of "bands" as a suggestion, but "striped" sounds more natural.

stripey

or striped - that automatically conjures up images of socks with horizontal, not vertical stripes. There are plenty of hits on google if you type in "stripey socks". I really can't think of any other alternative.
