French term

tribus affectuelles

French to English Social Sciences Tourism & Travel
Another little gem from the research paper that I am translating! The paper is about cultural events and their contribution to intangible heritage.

This phrase is a direct quote from an authoritative book by Michel Maffesoli - the quote as given in this paper is as follows:

The system to which the paper's author is referring is the system of values of the post-modern consumer:

A bit more of a dig around found another quote from Maffesoli which uses this term:

Any help or insights would be much appreciated. The best I've come up with is "affective tribes" but I don't think that cuts the mustard.

Oh, all right then! ;-)
Susan McDonald (asker) Dec 17, 2012:
I think you should post it as an answer - confirmation from peers is so very helpful. And I could then award points :-)
Philippa Smith Dec 17, 2012:
@John Thanks! I didn't post it as an answer as I feel all I've done is confirm what Susan had already suggested...
John Holland Dec 17, 2012:
@Philippa: Maffesoli translation Great job on linking to the existing translation. Would you like to write up an answer (so that I can vote for it)?
:)
Philippa Smith Dec 17, 2012:
Yes, it does sound interesting - I got very caught up in it when googling, maybe a book to put on the xmas list!
Susan McDonald (asker) Dec 17, 2012:
Thanks, Phillipa. I didn't see that translation of Maffesoli's book. Although after translating more of this paper, I think it would be interesting to read it! I think "affective" is probably the way to go.
Philippa Smith Dec 17, 2012:
Hi Susan, I think you could be okay with "affective tribes", it's a clear enough term in the context, and is has been used in a few academic papers, as you've probably seen:
http://www.idemployee.id.tue.nl/g.w.m.rauterberg/movies/livi...
http://eri.snu.ac.kr/aper/pdf/3-1/01-1.pdf
The other option would be "affectual tribes", also used:
http://delbourg-delphis.com/2009/07/preface-to-seth-godins-t...
http://archandphil.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/andersonbenaf...

When you look at the translation of Maffesoli's book on Google books, you can see the use made of both "affective" and "affectual" (see in particular "'affectual nebula", possibly a close concept to the "tribus affectuelles"):
http://books.google.fr/books?id=CJx4wxkiTl4C&q=affective#v=s...

So I'd say you could go with either of those solutions. Good luck!
