French term
artisan vigneron
French to English
Marketing
Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
This term appears in a newsletter put out by a Champagne producer. The sentence it appears in doesn't provide any context so I won't include it.
I understand this to mean a small grower as opposed to an industrial type of producer, but I don't know what the right term is.
Can somebody help?

independent winemaker
I would use independent to translate artisan in this context, as it tends to mean those who produce their own wine from their own vineyard, rather than those who sell to third parties or are part of a cooperative (that's how it is down here in the Languedoc, at least).
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.
Comment: "Yes, this is exactly what the newsletter says later in the text. They grow their own grapes and use only their own grapes to make their own wine.
Thanks for your help"

Just a comment about "artisanal" which so often causes us headaches.
The news this morning reported the stabbing of a prison officer with a "couteau artisanal". Since I very much doubt it was a bee-encrusted handcrafted masterpiece from France's hilly central regions, it suspect it was an IMPROVISED knife, things traditionally made from broken hack-saw blades liberated from prison workshops.
This goes here so that, with luck, someone looking for a translation of "artisan(al)" will stumble across it.
Re. your term, it might depend just how "artisanal" he is. In NZ they speak of "boutique wineries" producing high-quality, low-volume wines. "Boutique winemaker" or "boutique-wine maker"?
Of course the question is , is he a wine maker or a wine grower? I doubt there is much point or money in being a boutique wine GROWER unless one is backed up by or is oneself a boutique wine MAKER.
Any luck Googling his name, if your text does not elaborate?

This has become an answer, in case no-one noticed (another plea to the ProZ powers-that-be: how about a rethink so answerers can change the title term AND their confidence level?). Or maybe the rest of you are better organized than me!

What I meant was, is it made clear if he produces wine from the grapes he grows (I suspect he does) or just sells them to a vintner who does the wine-making (which I very much doubt). There might be GROWERS who produce in large quantities and sell their grapes to the large wine-making companies, but they would not boast about it. Nor would the small growers whose grapes get lumped into the local wine from the growers' cooperative. "Artisan" implies to me that he grows the grapes and produces a wine, quite probably sold exclusively from the estate.

Note from asker:
Nope, Googling the name doesn't help as the site is only in French |
