Child tax allowance Sounds fitting:

How to Claim Child Tax Allowances

That sounds good / fitting to me.....
RobinB Apr 4, 2017:
You can call it an "allowance for children" (to avoid confusion with the common translation of "Kindergeld" as "child allowance"). It is one of several "Freibeträge" (allowances) available to reduce personal income tax in Germany
michael10705 (X) Apr 4, 2017:
Yes, it seems it might be more applicable to call it something along the lines of "child tax exemption" or "personal exemption for children" or similar ?
Jacek Kloskowski Apr 4, 2017:
Good point. Both exemption and deduction lower taxable income, whereas the tax credit lowers the calculated tax amount. In general, deductions arise from expenses (for example mortgage interest deduction, business expenses etc), and they reduce the taxable income.
Ted Wozniak Apr 4, 2017:
tax exemption is the correct term Good point. It's not a tax credit but an exemption (similar to the personal exemption in US taxes) that reduces taxable income. A tax credit not the same thing as it reduces the tax liability directly.
michael10705 (X) Apr 4, 2017:
Is it clear that this is actually a "tax credit" as opposed to a tax deduction or non-taxable amount of income ? Tax credits would typically be considered dollar-for-dollar reductions of actual tax liability, as opposed to a reduction of taxable income.

Kinderfreibetrag

Child tax credit

A child tax credit is a tax credit available in some countries, which depends on the number of dependent children in a family. The credit may depend on other factors as well, such as income level.

Germany[edit]
Germany has a programme called the "Kinderfreibetrag" (de) which functions as a tax credit. The child allowance is an allowance in German tax law, which a certain amount of money is tax-free in the taxation of parents. In the income tax fee paid, child benefit and tax savings through the child tax credit are compared against each other, and the parents pay whichever results in the lesser amount of tax.
