there are innumerable sources in the www. confirming pathogenic agents to be a synonym of pathogens (Krankheitserreger).

As this is from a letter to parents about the prevention of communicable diseases I would opt to the more everyday expression:
amount/number of germs
e.g.:
The germs of a particular disease must come, moreover, from a person or an animal already infected with that particular kind of microbe. Typhoid germs always come from other typhoid germs, diphtheria germs from other diphtheria germs, just as oak trees come from acorns.

It seems there is no definite answer to what amount of germs and common infections, if any, our children should be exposed to. Playing with toys at the doctor’s office and mingling with several children everyday appears to be fairly harmless.

The amount of germs and illnesses in a child's classroom is enough to make anyone sick! All sorts of nasties can be easily spread from one peer to another.

: agree with felis (comment above) that the translation should reflect the original text as closely as possible. Germs are "Keime" in German. No need to get upset, though. How about the prions? They'd be offended to be called germs...

Germ = Keim, Erreger, Bakterium, Bazillus according to Reuter, Bunjes and all my textbooks. It would be nice, if you would at least get your facts right. Also, how much closer can I get to the original?// Again, please check your facts regarding "germs"!

A further word about the rest of translation:
Although "transmitted" is not a direct translation of verursacht, I'd use it in the translation instead of "caused".
