Greek term

ΠΡΟ (προαιρετικό)

Greek to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
In a list of a student's grades in a degree course, most of the subjects are marked ΥΠΟ for 'υποχρεωτικό'.

None at all are marked ΕΠΙ, which is the abbreviation I'm used to seeing for 'επιλεγμένο'.

A few are marked ΠΡΟ, which I take to be 'προαιρετικό'.

There seems to be just one instance of ΕΥ (if I've read it correctly, the page is rather blurred!), which perhaps means 'κατ' επιλογήν υποχρεωτικό'.

Where does 'προαιρετικό' fit into all this? The term is explained on various Greek websites, e.g.

Thank you for the link.
Nick Lingris Nov 11, 2014:
Have a look at this page:
http://www.aegean.gr/aegean/greek/people/students/strpar.htm
The explanation is good and optionals are considered to be the same as electives, and different from compulsory electives.
In any case, it's safe to go by the standard translation.
Dylan Edwards (asker) Nov 11, 2014:
Perhaps there isn't a distinction after all between επιλέξιμο/επιλεγμένο/επιλογής on the one hand and προαιρετικό on the other...

The precise definition may differ from one university to another, and they may revise their terminology over the years. For example, I find that the Athens Uni. of Economics made this change in the year 2002-3: ' Η λέξη "προαιρετικό" αντικαθίσταται με τη λέξη "επιλογής". '

Note from asker:
How would you distinguish this from επιλέξιμο/επιλεγμένο μάθημα ? There is the word 'elective', but for a long time I've seen no evidence that a clear distinction is maintained in English between 'optional course' and 'elective course'.
