Change log

Nov 13, 2012 16:20: Assimina Vavoula changed "Edited KOG entry" from "<a href="/profile/76120">Assimina Vavoula's</a> old entry - "επιλογή"" to ""option""

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Maya M Fourioti

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

transphy Nov 12, 2012:
You *choose* or *select* one of the options. You HAVE the option of choosing/selecting.
-Please** choose** up to three of the following

1) Product features (such as premium, cover, investment/fund range/options)
2) Performance of the product (its track record)
3) Recommendation from family/friends
4) It is recommended by my insurance agent / intermediary
5) It is recommended by my bank
6) The brand of insurance provider
7) Their reputation for customer service
****options to choose/select from!!!****
Philip Lees Nov 12, 2012:
In answer to Kyriacos' question, I wouldn't translate "item" as "επιλογή" unless it was quite obvious that the item in question was actually an option or a selection. But yes, "item" is a difficult word because it can mean so many different things.
Kyriacos Georghiou Nov 12, 2012:
ok, I thought perhaps the Original English version was: Read the item describing the sex of .....
Assimina Vavoula (asker) Nov 12, 2012:
Kyriacos Georghiou Nov 12, 2012:
Is this a Back Translation project Assimina?
Philip Lees Nov 12, 2012:
That is one meaning of option, yes. However, alternative answers on a questionnaire are also commonly referred to as options. The question, together with the options, would make up an item.
transphy Nov 12, 2012:
I am not sure about 'Option' as this more gives 'the RIGHT to choose'
Georgios Tziakos Nov 12, 2012:
I think you nailed it, Philip.
Philip Lees Nov 12, 2012:

Katerina Nijenhuis Nov 12, 2012:
Georgios Tziakos Nov 12, 2012:
Katerina Nijenhuis Nov 12, 2012:
Georgios Tziakos Nov 12, 2012:
Περίεργο που το αποκαλεί "επιλογή". Δεν νομίζω να στέκει το "option" σε ερωτηματολόγιο. Πρόκειται για κάποιο προαιρετικό πεδίο;

option

Based on the other question Assimina posted from the same context, this seems to be an instruction to the interviewer. In that case, "option" does make some kind of sense.
Peer comment(s):

agree Georgios Tziakos : Perfect sense, really - it's the "διαβάστε" part that mystified me at first.

"Item" is a rather difficult word to translate, I found

neutral Philip Lees : To me, an "item" on a questionnaire would suggest the question and the possible alternative answers (options) as a unit.

On the other hand Philip, how would you translate: Read the item describing the sex of .....
neutral Nadia-Anastasia Fahmi : I agree with Phillip. Have a very nice day!
