за неимением гербовой, пишем на простой

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature proverb
consideration of the practical performability of engineering calculations («за неимением гербовой, пишем на простой»).

Discussion

The Misha Nov 30, 2011:
Wouldn't you say this is exactly what "Za neimeniyem gerbovoy bumagi" means?
LanaUK Nov 29, 2011:
Не совсем уверена насчёт лимонада, так как идиома означает что-то типа "за неимением лучшего можно воспользоваться простым средством" = make do with what you've got, imho.
The Misha Nov 29, 2011:
The problem seems to be with the original phrase itself, which has apparently been thrown together by a non-native (no native engineer would call it performability). The meaning of the Russian idiom - which, IMHO, is very close to American "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade" - does not support the actual statement.
LanaUK Nov 29, 2011:
А контекст?
