Texto de origen - español Debo de decir que, no sin gran admiración mía, Primo Cova cumplió estrictamente su palabra. Hizo más: fue en todas partes el defensor, abogado y encomiasta de la conducta de Feíta. Yo temía que los arranques de ésta diesen motivo para que en Marineda la apedreasen. Cierto que se habló a destajo, que se armó alboroto, y se calificó a la emancipada, según merecía, de insolente marimacho: pero en punto importantísimo de su honra, en la interpretación maligna e infamante a que se prestaban sus correrías, fue dictamen general no atribuir a genialidades de Feíta, por lo pronto, ninguna intención siniestra. Debió de contribuir a esta indulgencia relativa del público la campaña benévola del en otras ocasiones desaforado maldiciente Primo Cova.
El propio desenfado característico de Feíta, la claridad de sus palabras, la impetuosidad de su proceder, borraron sombras y disiparon sospechas. Los agoreros más pesimistas se limitaron de predecir que Feíta, si no se había perdido, acabaría por perderse irremisiblemente, entre los azares y riesgos de la vida libre e insólita a que se entregaba. Hasta en esto rompió lanzas por ello Primo Cova. «No se perderá la chica.» ―aseguró tan impávido como si tuviese don de profecía―, «porque su despejo natural y el mundo que va a correr la enseñarán a precaverse. Además, a esa niña, hoy por hoy, sin cuidado la tienen los hombres y el dios Cupidillo. Lo que la hierve en los sesos es el afán de estudiar, de saber, y de aprovechar y de lucir su sabiduría. ¿No ven ustedes cómo anda, hecha un Caifás, con el pelo corto, cada bota lo mismo que un lanchón, los dedos negros y la saya de través? ¿Ustedes afirman que caerá? Pues yo sostengo una apuesta. Apuesto a que antes que se pierda ese peruchón, se habrán reperdido unas cinco o seis muchachas de su misma esfera social, que viven al estilo antiguo, no salen solas y no dan lecciones. ¡A ver quién se juega mil realitos!»
A pesar de la atmósfera semi-benigna que se formó alrededor de la emancipada, yo me sentí tan cohibido, por la circunstancia de haber sido mi casa el terreno donde Feíta realizó su primer escarceo, que me escondí, dejé de concurrir a la tertulia de Neira, y hasta evité encontrarme con D. Benicio. Nada, cautela, mucho tiento: a tu agujero, ratón: no arriesguemos por cosa de este mundo la adorable tranquilidad.
Entre tanto, Feíta, rota la valla, no se contenía. Mañana y tarde se la veía recorrer las calles, de verso suelto, ufana, intrépida, desgreñada, empecatada de toilette. Diríase que era alguna forastera que no había estado en Marineda jamás, según el anhelo y prisa con que recorrió y curioseó la ciudad, cruzando impávida los callejones más vitandos, saliendo al campo, visitando los alrededores, escudriñando los monumentos y hasta sacando dibujos de algunas graciosas puertas románicas y algunas casas del siglo XV que se conservan aún en la vieja Nautilia. Si en la calle o por los andurriales la encontraba algún conocido y se brindaba a acompañarla, la chica rehusaba sin ambajes ni cumplimientos. ―«Me encuentro felicísima haciéndome compañía a mí propia» ―decía, con tal irradiación de gozo en las pupilas verdes, que era preciso creerla y dejarla cumplir el capricho.

Primo Cova took up cudgels on this point too.
“The girl won’t be lost,” he assured, unperturbed, as though he had the gift of prophecy, “because her natural intuition and the world she’s going to move in will teach her to be cautious. Besides, for now the girl cares little for men or cupid’s arrow. What’s on her mind is the desire to study, to learn, to revel in and flaunt her knowledge. Don’t you see how she walks, like a Caifás[i], with her short hair, boots the size of boats, blackened fingernails and petticoats awry?
Are you certain she will fall into disrepute?
Well, I propose a bet. I’ll wager that before this peruchón[ii] is lost, five or six of her social circle who live the old way, who don’t go out alone or give lessons, will be irretrievably lost.

Since it was my territory where Feíta was making her first foray, and despite the benign atmosphere that surrounded her, I felt so awkward that I hid in my room. I stopped going to the Neira tertulia[iv] and even avoided meeting Don Benicio. Be careful: stay in your hole, mouse. Let’s not risk our beloved tranquility for anything.
Meanwhile, Feíta was breaking down barriers and could not be contained. Morning and evening, she could be seen walking the streets, free as a bird, smug, fearless and dishevelled, willfully disregarding the rules of ladies’ grooming. One might say she was an outsider who had never been to Marineda due to the eagerness and haste with which she explored the city, boldly traversing the most dangerous alleyways, visiting the countryside and surrounding areas, examining monuments and even sketching some graceful Romanesque arches and fifteenth century houses that were still preserved in the old Nautilia[v]. If she met an acquaintance off the beaten path who offered to accompany her, the girl would refuse without excuses or acquiescence.
“I am delighted to keep my own company,” she would say, with such pleasure radiating from her green eyes that it was only right to take her at her word and leave her to indulge her whim.
