The lower parts of these two summits represent the remains of an incredibly complex series of events. Technically, they are described as amphibolitic andesites. I don’t know what that means either, but I’ll try to interpret the situation. It went something like this. As a result of massive explosions, huge amounts of lava were ejected from a magma chamber that then collapsed. The result was a chaotic mix of rock fragments which included remains of the volcano’s dome and bits of lava flows. Particularly explosive episodes added tuffs (compacted volcanic fragments and dust) of various types to the brew. Add to this a series of fossil-rich intercalations of sedimentary rocks which are the remnants of beach and shallow marine episodes. The experts differ in their opinions as to exactly when this happened but agree that it was somewhere between 10 and 15 million years ago. That there is some dispute is heartening for an interested amateur who struggles to comprehend even the basics of what went on here in the geological past and wonders at the skill of anyone who can read ancient rocks in such a magical way.
