Il s'agit ici d'une interview d'un acteur qui incarne un trafiquant international dans une série. L'acteur en dit plus sur son rôle et comment il s'est préparé à jouer les méchants. Contexte :
"I went with the script and then when his family died I put him into this dark world. Because his brother was in a military place and dad was hard working and mom was hard working, when everyone died he became more into a dark place. He is a smart guy. He may have put himself through different types of schooling to become this difficult thing that can get to anyone and into anywhere."
Je n'arrive pas à rendre cette fin de phrase ici "become this difficult thing that can get to anyone and into anywhere"

I've put the "torturé"/"sans doute" in brackets as I'm not convinced they are necessary but you are the best judge of that:-)

"Il a sans doute dû suivre plusieurs chemins" is preferable to "il se peut..." which puts too much uncertainty into it. Personally, I think the "sans doute" is unnecessary. After all, this is an actor trying to get into someone's head so explaining how he's going to play this complex character..."the way I see it is that he had to..."
I read "He may have put" = he had to. I think there is no uncertainty at all. The actor is really saying...it may be (I think that) the character had to take various routes to arrive at this position...I also think "chemins" is better than getting into education/schooling or using "discipline"
Merci polyglot. Effectivement, j'hésite aussi entre "il a pu" et "il a dû" mais je vois que Gallagy penche pour le "dû" en tant qu'anglophone. Pour ce qui est de "schooling", effectivement "disciplines" pourrait convenir mais j'ai l'impression d'être un peu trop collée au texte avec ce terme.
Ou alors plus simplement : "C’est un type intelligent qui a dû suivre plusieurs chemins pour finalement parvenir à ce statut de criminel torturé capable d’atteindre n’importe qui, n’importe où".
I'm not really sure about the "torturé" with "criminel"... I think it is more about the difficulty of the road he has taken to arrive at the position he is in now. It explains why he has become such a complex individual
Merci Gallagy. J'emploierais plutôt "tortueux" plutôt que "torturés" avec "chemins" en français. Cela donnerait : "C’est un type intelligent qui a dû suivre plusieurs chemins pour finalement parvenir à ce statut de criminel torturé (je rajouterai "torturé" ici), position qui lui permet d'atteindre n'importe qui, n'importe où".
I think I'll leave the French to a native (and assuming I'm right in my reading of the English) but maybe something like
"C’est un type intelligent qui a dû suivre plusieurs chemins torturés pour finalement arriver à cet endroit/cette position où il est capable d'atteindre n'importe qui, n'importe où"
@Gallagy, effectivement, je comprends où vous voulez en venir. J'ai employé ici "torturé" en me basant sur le début de l'interview, lorsque l'acteur explique que son personnage a perdu ses parents dans un incendie, son frère à l'armée et qu'il a dû faire des choses terribles à cause des superstitions de son entourage. Peut-être suis-je allée trop loin...? Comment rendriez-vous ce "difficult thing" avec le sens que vous proposez ? "C’est un type intelligent qui a dû suivre plusieurs chemins/voies pour finalement devenir ce personnage ?" @polyglot, le lien parle bien-sûr du personnage.
I have a similar understanding to Tony..(you may have asked this as En>En because it really isn't that clear!). However, I think "this difficult thing" is referring to the POSITION (in society) he has managed to reach (through education and presumably getting contacts and raisng himself in society), where he has access to everyone and everything. Certainly, for a Chinese man this would be a really great position to be in...Just to add, he is not "torturé" but getting to that position was
@polyglot45, il est d'origine chinoise. @Tony, effectivement, c'est un personnage assez atypique qui a des capacités très spéciales (lourd passé, traditions culturelles chinoises empreintes de superstitions, etc.). Cela pourrait peut-être donner quelque chose comme : "C’est un type intelligent qui a dû suivre plusieurs chemins/voies pour finalement devenir ce personnage torturé capable d'atteindre n'importe qui, n'importe où". Qu'en pensez-vous ? Est-ce le sens ici ? Merci
'difficult thing' is referring to this character who is 'difficult'.
And I suspect 'get to' means that he has the ability/skill/knack/gift of being able to get access to people or place that other people cannot get to...

c'est du vrai n'importe quoi, dépourvu de tout sens. Il faudra probablement rester assez proche du texte car quand c'est creux, c'est creux.
