Note to Dusty: who said anything about matching sound levels?? THe expression assortie de means to match. \"When a new sound is entered into the database, the interface [database interface] receives the matching reference signals\"

The problem is the answerers don\'t know English or the technical side and in this case, you missed the French. Sounds LEVELS are not what is being matched. It\'s the recognition of the sound as one the database will accept or that is not already there...

You wouldn\'t say: receives the signals with its references....

matching reference signal...if there is no match between the incoming signal and interface, the signal will not be recognized and stored in the database.

C\'mon Dusty my friend. Get with the program!! :)

clearly I am losing it...:)

...il fallait seulement savoir écouter les mots, disait-elle...:)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Sorry, Jane, but 'LEVEL matching' is something QUITE different, and very specific, and doesn't sound to me like what is meant here. In you 'shoes' example, it is used as an ADJECTIVE, which changes things quite a bit

Ok Dusty I will do the translation
disagree Julia Gal : This has nothing to do with matching! It means "receives the signal, along with its references" - in other words it receives them together, at the same time.

I'm just adding this in order to be able to comment at greater length, in particular on Jane L-R's remarks.
First, I was NOT refering to 'SOUND level matching', but 'SIGNAL level matching', as in a number of Jane's references. And I was just trying to point out that 'signal level matching' does indeed have a sound technical meaning, but not necessarily anything to do with 'signal matching' tout court.
And I beg to differ with you, Jane --- signals ARE often sent 'along with their references' --- in certain applications, this is vital, in order for the interface to be able to correctly interpret the signals.
It is, of course, all very much dependent on the wider context; but I believe that the answers suggesting it means 'accompanied by' or 'along with' are on the right lines here.
And are we sure what sort of 'references' these are? Does it man, for example, 'refernce voltages'? A digital audio signal might well need to be tamd up with its refercne signal (for precison working, for example). Or does it mean 'identification information' --- like, for example, the EXIF data that accompanies the image files from certain digital cameras?
We really need to know an awful lot more about the context before any of us can be dogmatic about our answers!
And I'd just like to add that I'm not talking entirely out of my hat (or elsewhere...!), inasmuch as my previous 20+ year career was in professional audio and electronics!

And just in case anyone thinks my knowledge of audio may be better than my knowledge of French, might I just add that I have OFTEN encountered the verb/participle \'assorti\' used in contexts that required the sense of \'accompanied by...\' and where \'matching\' simply would not have worked -- as in an \"exposition de peintures assorties de commentaires de l\'artiste\"

Let\'s remember that the base idea of \'assortir\' is \'to match up with\', and hence it is not difficult to make the extension to \'matched up with\', i.e. \'accompanied by\'

Apologies for the number of typos in my initial answer! Excuses include tiredness, and a very slow and costly Internet connection here in deepest rural France, making my on-line typing dangerously hasty!
It should of course have read:
\"And are we sure what sort of \'references\' these are? Does it man, for example, \'reference voltages\'? A digital audio signal might well need to be teamed up with its reference signal..\"
Peer comment(s):

agree CMJ_Trans (X) : absolutely, especially about the lack of context. That said, this one seemed obvious and it's a shame the red herring crept in here
