Behaviour of Water, Ports (water in port)
Analyse de l’agitation résiduelle dans le port par modélisation numérique
This is a section title; the word "agitation" comes up frequently in the text, referring to the "waviness" of the water, i.e. the degree to which it is not calm. I really need an english noun for this, in an engineering / scientific register (feasability study).
Thanks.

residual turbulence
* maybe that's the word?

Comment: "I chose this among other good answers because "turbulence" worked in my doc both where it was present and where it was absent (this was measured at various points in a harbor). Thanks for your help."

residual roughness
Well the normal term for "agitation" of water is "roughness", but I realise it doesn't sound too scientific. (Although to me your "waviness" sounds rather nice!)
It is referred to this way in:
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v456/n7224/full/nature0...

As Clanola points out my reference actually refers to the sea floor rather than the surface of water, so it is probably not terrible relevant. But I still think roughness or choppiness may be the only words available... I hope someone else can confirm or find something better.

Note from asker:
Thanks for your excellent ref. It confirms that roughness can be used in a scientific context. |
Thanks for your help. This is a frequently used term, though I opted for "turbulence" in the end. |

: I think that the roughness referred to in the article is the roughness of the floor (the uneven, not smooth quality) and not 'agitation' in the sense of water being rough. Yes, water can be described as 'rough', but this article is not talking about that.

Roughness or choppiness seem to me the only possibilities unless someone can come up with something more inspired. I only gave medium confidence because I suspect there is something better :-)

residual disturbance
'...on a scale too small to show the residual disturbance of the water in front...'
Note from asker:
Thanks for your help. This would work in certain contexts; for mine I went with "turbulence." |

: "Residuel" often has the meaning of "background", eg "bruit residuel". "(Wave) disturbance" is spot on.

residual swell
Is this "agitation" that caused by weather conditions, in which case "residual swell" could be the term you're looking for, or is it "agitation" on a smaller scale, such as might be created in a port by the movement of ships and particularly or thrusters?

Note from asker:
Thanks for your help. "Agitation" in my text is used to refer to both normal water conditions and variations caused by weather. It has not (so far) been used to denote results of ship movement. |
Thanks for your help. Swell is often the correct term, but I went with turbulence as it better allowed for both the presence and absence of "agitation." Also, in my doc. I had to distinguish between "houles" (translated as swell) and agitation. |
