French term

"chercheur à gages"

French to English Art/Literary Education / Pedagogy
I'm looking for a clever way to render this play on words in English and would appreciate any suggestions.

The context is a critical analysis of academic involvement in NGOs and development work.

Enfin, les contractors académiques, entrepreneurs individuels répondant aux appels d'offres locales et internationales, parfois décriés comme ***''chercheurs à gages''*** ; ils travaillent sur contrat de projet ou bien contrat à durée déterminée, et leurs activités sont très diverses.

Thank you in advance for your ideas.
Best,
Jocelyne

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much to all. This was tough to grade, but I've gone with Andrew's "mercenaries of the mind" as it was the idea behind Linda's suggestion, which I actually ended up using. I'm sorry that I can't split points. Best, Jocelyne"

French term (edited): "chercheurs à gages"

research mercenaries

'Tueur à gages' is a hit man, hired killer, so working on those lines, I think Andrew's word "mercenaries", added to the word 'research'.
Peer comment(s):

agree Christopher Newell : I like this idea, it renders the "à gages" idea very well

contract researchers

I know several academics in GB who do this sort of thing. It's a pretty widespread and respected activity, so this translation does not have any hint of a pejorative interpretation to it.
Peer comment(s):

agree whither has fle : now that is interesting...but also confusing considering what "à gages" means in French.

money-motivated researchers

Hello,

They'll only do it if they get well-paid. They are simply money-motivated.

I hope this helps.
