NOT amateurs though they might be...amateur means NOT PROFESSIONAL en anglais. Un point, c'est tout.

: Well, maybe they know more about cheese than they do about wine, but it is bizarre to phrase it like that!

: "lovers of (both) wine and cheese" might be another possibility to combine the two. But for the Q as asked - yep - wine lovers.

: Actually in UK English, "amateur wine enthusiasts" would be fine - it doesn't carry any bad connotations, just means it's a hobby they indulge in rather than a job

amateurs is a false friend in this context.

: Why does "fanciers" always make me think of pigeons? Bow-wow.

maybe because pigeon fanciers is such a fixed term. however interrogatively speaking, I have heard 'anyone fancy a wine'? but never 'anyone fancy a pigeon?'. arf arf

Wine connoisseurs
not sure if it takes a double n though.
Could replace wine by spirits for a more generical approach.

: no objection to connoisseurs, but "spirits" is not more generic, "spirits" is distilled alcoholic drinks - vodka, tequilla, gin, whisky, rum, brandy, etc - all the things bars serve in optics ! :-)
