Η ελεύθερη ρίζα του υδροξυλίου (ΟΗ۰), είναι κατά κύριο λόγο υπεύθυνη για την μοριακή οξειδωτική αποδόμηση των πρωτεϊνών.6,9
Η ρίζα του υδροξυλίου, μπορεί να προκύψει κατά πολλούς τρόπους. Οι πλέον διασαφηνισμένοι, είναι οι ακόλουθοι:
1. Από ηλεκτρονική επίδραση επί του ασταθούς υπεροξειδίου του
υδρογόνου.
Η2Ο2 + e- → ΟΗ- + ΟΗ۰
2. Από την επίδραση ανιόντος του υπεροξειδίου, επί του ασταθούς
υπεροξειδίου του υδρογόνου.
Η2Ο2 + Ο2- → ΟΗ- + ΟΗ۰ + Ο2
3. Από την αναγωγή ιόντος σιδήρου (Fe) ή χαλκού (Cu) από το
ανιόν του υπεροξειδίου και την εν συνεχεία επίδραση του
κατιόντος επί του ασταθούς υπεροξειδίου του υδρογόνου.
Fe+++ + Ο2- → Fe++ + Ο2

4. Από την διάσπαση της υπεροξυνιτρώδους ρίζας.
Η ρίζα του οξειδίου του αζώτου, συντίθεται ενζυμικώς (συνθετά-
ση οξειδίου του αζώτου) στο ενδοθήλιο των αγγείων, στο Κ.Ν.Σ.
και στα φαγοκύτταρα (λευκοκύτταρα)6,8
Η εν συνεχεία ένωσή της με το οξυγόνο, οδηγεί στην σύνθεση
της υπεροξυνιτρώδους ρίζας, η οποία ως ασταθής διασπάται σε
όξινο περιβάλλον, αποδίδοντας ρίζα υδροξυλίου.
