Source text - English In general, the religious-secular dichotomy has been discussed by many scholars for a long time. This paper aims to take a look at the categories religiosity and secularity from a quantitative perspective. For analysing the categories the Believing-Belonging-Matrix (Reitsma et al, 2014) and the data from the EVS 2008 will be used. Above all, the Believing-Belonging-Matrix combines two important aspects of sociology of religion. It includes religious self-identification (believing) as well as church attendance (belonging), On the one hand, the matrix measures the categories religiosity (believing and belonging) and secularity (neither believing nor belonging). On the other hand, it is possible to identify other categories that are not completely covered by the religious-secular dichotomy in a strict and consistent sense. Additionally, the matrix provides the categories habitual attendance (belonging without believing) and individual religiosity (believing without belonging). First, the paper asks to what extent the four types of the Believing-Belonging-Matrix can be found in European countries? Second, the paper tries to illustrate which factors have an impact on the types of the matrix. The regression model contains the following independent variables: denominations, countries, modernization aspects (such as income, education, urbanization, postmaterialism) and demographic aspects (age and gender). Finally, the paper shows that religiosity and secularity are still highly relevant categories in European countries from a quantitative perspective.
Translation - German Generell wird die Dichotomie religiös und säkular seit längerer Zeit von vielen Wissenschaftlern diskutiert. In diesem Beitrag sollen die Kategorien Religiosität und Säkularität aus einer quantitativen Perspektive betrachtet werden. Für die Analyse der Kategorien werden die Believing-Belonging-Matrix (Reitsma et al, 2014) sowie die Daten des EVS 2008 verwendet. Vor allem verbindet die Believing-Belonging-Matrix zwei wichtige Aspekte der Religionssoziologie.Sie umfasst sowohl die religiöse Selbstidentifikation (Glaube) als auch den Kirchenbesuch (Zugehörigkeit). Auf der einen Seite misst die Matrix die Kategorien Religiosität (Glaube und Zugehörigkeit) und Säkularität (weder Glaube noch Zugehörigkeit). Auf der anderen Seite lassen sich weitere Kategorien identifizieren, die nicht vollständig von der religiös-säkularen Dichotomie im strengen und konsistenten Sinne erfasst werden. Zusätzlich bietet die Matrix die Kategorien habitueller Kirchgang (Zugehörigkeit ohne Glauben) und individuelle Religiosität (Glauben ohne Zugehörigkeit). Zunächst wird die Frage gestellt, inwieweit die vier Typen der Believing-Belonging-Matrix in den europäischen Ländern zu finden sind. Zweitens wird versucht zu veranschaulichen, welche Faktoren einen Einfluss auf die Typen der Matrix haben. Das Regressionsmodell enthält die folgenden unabhängigen Variablen: Konfessionen, Länder, Modernisierungsaspekte (wie Einkommen, Bildung, Urbanisierung, Postmaterialismus) und demografische Aspekte (Alter und Geschlecht) und zeigt schließlich, dass Religiosität und Säkularität in den europäischen Ländern aus quantitativer Sicht immer noch sehr relevante Kategorien sind.
