It would be wise to combine two features we already have | Jun 25, 2009 |
and replace option: "Send me the first validated answer (not for points)" with community grading - this way if someone does not feel competent enough to choose the right answer he/she could leave grading to the community.
Cheers

Yeah... I mean it takes time and effort to answer KudoZ questions. The least the asker can do is award points. It's a courtesy.

I must admit I do not understand the rationale behind the "not for points" option. Surely if someone asks for help with a translation term, those who take the time and effort to answer should at least be rewarded?
There are plenty of sites on the web providing "free" translations; if someone wants a translation from a human as opposed to a machine they should at least, in my humble opinion, go to the trouble of thanking that person.
Just my 2 cents - any thoughts?
Well said Fiona. I don't bother answering the not for points questions because if I am taking my time to help you then I should be thanked for my time and effort!

Agree with you, Tina.
Personally, I would never label a question as a "not for points" question, because I would like to thank my colleagues for their help, time spent and all the efforts involved. IMHO, sometimes this option is misused by some askers, but most of the time, it is chosen randomly by newbies (who might not know the difference.)
The way I see it, it should not be left up the asker, but to the answerer if it is going to be a "not for points" answer or not.

Overall, statistically (in my SC at least,) the "not for points" questions receive less answers and attention then the regular ones. Often, the quality drops with less participation as well.

I am not concerned about the points per sé but about the attitude of those who don't wish to thank the people who have spent time and effort to help them out. I don't bother answering "not for points" questions, nor do I answer or validate "first validated answer" questions. I think both are bad deviations from what is basically a good system.

I feel there is something about rude about the "not for points" option, as if it would hurt the asker to give points.
I also hate the new wait twenty-four hours feature. I waited a day to select the best answer but was told by the machine that I still had to wait another four hours, even though the chances of another answer turning up in that time were slim to say the least. And now I've just realised that four days later I still haven't graded the answers.

I never did understand why that option was implemented in the first place. Unless someone can give me a valid reason why this option should be kept, I vote for nixing it as well.

I think the twenty-four hour rule is a good one; I don't think you can ever say the chances of another answer turning up is "slim", and I remember many cases in the past where people would literally close the question after five minutes. And I wouldn't worry about waiting four days to grade the answers
I think the 24 hour rule should stay, but the "not for points" should go.

The proponents of no-points KudoZ answers won a Pyrrhic victory when the Powers that Be gave us not-for-points QUESTIONS in response. Askers can specify that they won't award points for their questions, but this option is seldom used and when it is used it is more than likely because the askers have no idea what they're doing. They are usually new to the site and so overwhelmed by all the options that they're afraid to get into something they don't understand.

I find the "from test/homework" option pretty useless, too. What difference does it make where the question came from?
Totally agree with both Fiona and Andreas.
Pointless to explain why "not-for-points" questions are sooo pointless!
The same applies to the "source" of a question.

I agree with all those who want to remove "not for points" and "test/homework" options.
A question can be PRO or non-PRO (or, according to the proposed new labels, Difficult or Easy). Full stop.

Some users believe that the awarding of KudoZ points detracts from the KudoZ experience. It is possible for such users to opt to make a question "not for points" when asking.
This is not the default option. In order to post "not for points" question an asker must select the special option "This is a "not for points" question; you will still need to select the best answer but you will be neither asked nor able to award points."

There are no plans for the removal of this option.

I would be that if you could survey users that pick that option, in many cases they have no idea what it means. More than once I have pointed out tongue-in-cheek that I have a good answer but won't give it because of the "not for points" option, and users express surprise, or that they had no idea what it meant, or that they had not thought about what that meant. I have never had anyone say "I'll get better answers" or "more answers"...
