Wouldn't it be nice if you could get paid for answering KudoZ questions?
I enjoy it more than translating, and I have no objection to doing it for free.
Also, I'm not sure if charging would be feasible in practice, and it would undermine the cooperative ethos of ProZ. And I don't know how you'd determine whether an answer was "correct" and therefore worth paying for.

A few years back I had the pleasure of visiting the Termium offices in Montreal (http://www.btb.termiumplus.gc.ca/) and meeting some of the terminologists.
The woman I met explained how she had spent the last few weeks visiting diamond mines and workshops and places where they made jewelry to find and record the terminology used in the field, both in English and in French. This is the final frontier of terminology research - where domains are so specialized that there exists not only no bilingual dictionary but no monolingual dictionary and the best you can find are glossaries haphazardly put together by companies for their own internal use.
So the job exists but it's more field work than google

YOU DO!
You get "paid" by earning KudoZ points, which can be converted into jobs from
observant outsourcers.
Also, "paid" can be redefined as "rewarded",

And how much would you expect the asker to pay per question? It probably is worth 10 cents per question and if you answer 20 questions in an hour, the dollar amount will be $2. And if you put into consideration the administrative procedures that might be neccessary to claim the $2, your hourly payment would drop to less than $1. There are many things to do other than this.

For some highly creative jobs I have hired translator colleagues for brainstorming (brand name development, development of board games) at a three-digit hourly rate in US $. It was worth every cent.

and finding out how things work....obscure processes, and the not so obscure. I've often thought of setting up local tours of plastics factories, quarries, steelworks,etc., but then decided that there are not enough potential clients/other obsessives out there.

I think there is no need for development of those grey areas as long as you know you can trust the person/company hiring the freelancers.
Everything that becomes too commercial is borne to fail due to greed.

And vice versa. Brainstorming only works with trusted people. There is no time for "getting to know each other", "learning how the other person thinks" and small talk.

I was referring mainly to rates, since more often than not translation jobs are indeed copywriting job and are not paid accordingly.

Say if the asker were a $0.01 translator, how would you expect them to have funds for the KudoZ answers?
