Every time I ask a Kudoz question my mailbox is flooded with lengthy and inappropriate answers from a certain user who then hides them, modifies them and makes addenda, disagrees with other answers and makes inappropriate and sometimes polemic discussion entries, with every action causing a new email alert to interrupt me when I am driving or working or eating, often days after I have sent off the translation. He is registered as a native speaker of English but his command of the language is so poor one wonders how he can possibly claim to be a professional translator. The Kudoz user experience would be so much better if such users could be blocked. I click on "PRO - a question that is suitable for professional translators" each time but this doesn't filter out incompetents and timewasters. Any ideas? ▲ Collapse | | | It may be difficult | Jun 21, 2012 |
There is an option of filtering out users of Kudoz, but it affects only notifications about new questions so is of no use to askers. However you could use a filter in your email client. And filter out e-mails containing a particular phrase - in this case name of the answerer.

Hi,
Sending the type of emails you describe isn't really allowed. You should report this to the SiteStaff imo.
Fwiw, posting a question as "Pro" actually attracts more people, so it's really counterproductive if your aim is to eliminate/discourage incompetents and/or timewasters. PointZ chasers generally run to Pro questions and an easy question marked as Pro brings them all out from under the rug. | | | Paul Hirsh Γαλλία Local time: 17:48 Γαλλικά σε Αγγλικά + ... Misunderstanding? The emails don't come direct from the answerer but from the Kudoz system.

When such problems arise, contact the moderators in the respective language pair (or any other moderator you may prefer). You may also need to contact ProZ.com site administration sending them a support request (http://www.proz.com/support).
Moderators are granted the authority to deal with such cases, so first contact them. If they need further support, they may contact site administration, too. Provide them with the name of the (ab)user, hyperlinks to questions like those described, etc., e.g. provide them with as much detail as possible.
Hope this helps. If you have any doubts, questions or queries, do not hesitate to contact moderators: we are here to help.
Have a nice day,
Kalinka

It's not allowed to send harassing emails via the Proz/Kudoz system. That's why I suggested that you report it. Afaik, Proz has no way to control private emails sent via third party providers. | | | Paul Hirsh Γαλλία Local time: 17:48 Γαλλικά σε Αγγλικά + ... They are not harassing emails, but a tide of well-meaning but inappropriate and sometimes inarticulate answers from an over-assiduous but linguistically challenged user.
I think you assumed I am using "inappropriate" in the PC sense as a euphemism for "rude". I use the dictionary meaning. | | | Post removed: This post was hidden by a moderator or staff member because it was not in line with site rule |

would be to not get any notifications sent to you from Kudoz, and just check in person from time to time for any new answers.
I do this as there is some sort of blip between proz and my email inbox which means rather than getting emails instantly I get nothing for hours and then six or ten emails all at once, usually after I've seen the questions/jobs/answers they refer to. You do have to remember to check though. | | | Sorry, I thought this was bothering you. My misunderstanding | Jun 21, 2012 |

But then he could also be accused of being selfish and measly. I'm also not sure it would deter the person in question if he posted all his questions as NP.

The best way is to put filters in your mail. I use that for Kudoz, for thank you, for jobs and keep my mailbox clean...

I found this in the KudoZ FAQS:
KudoZ interaction between profiles may be blocked at the discretion of site staff
I think the intention was to prevent friends and family from unfairly influencing KudoZ activity...but if they have the power to do it (which this indicates they do), then ask them. | | | Sheila Wilson Ισπανία Local time: 16:48 Μέλος από 2007 Αγγλικά + ... There are certainly many people on here who claim to be native in English plus another language, who most definitely are not native in English (the only language where I can judge the issue). And there are some who definitely are native-equivalent - I fully accept that. The problem is that the second language input is not verified in any way by ProZ.com. Some of these people, who may be totally incapable of structuring an English sentence correctly, even answer English monolingual questions and clog them up with rubbish in the way Paul is talking about.
Native language is such an important attribute in ProZ that surely there should be some sort of restriction. Otherwise, it loses all value and meaning.
As far as restricting their use of KudoZ, I don't know that there's anything we can do apart from filtering them out, but I don't know that that would do the trick either.
