I'm not sure what to think of the attend vs. participate tangent, but I'd say offhand that if you attend an event you are participating in that event too, and then there are levels of participation. Today I'd go so far as to say that if I attend an event, I am participating by gracing others with my very presence, even if I'm only off in the corner by myself grumbling about how dumb it is to go to events... but that's just because I think so highly of myself... so is it a question of self esteem...
