English term or phrase: Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act
A commission was soon set up to consider the staffing and training requirements of the new service, and representatives of the AOT and SAOT became involved in protracted negotiations with the Ministry of Health and the British Medical Association (BMA) on how occupational therapy should be regulated. The BMA wanted to continue to control the 'auxiliary professions', including occupational therapy, while the professions themselves wanted autonomy. The outcome was a compromise. The Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act (1960) provided for a board for each of the eight professions, regulated by a council (CPSM) responsible to the Privy Council. The boards and council had strong medical representation, albeit not sufficient to outvote the professions (Mendez 1978).
