French to English Marketing Nutrition
Describing a nutrition program at a corporate restaurant (cafeteria) with "recettes savoureuses et calibrees en calories". Customers basically figure out how many calories they need for lunch, make up their tray, and then get to add a "joker" (bread, beverage, yogurt, etc.) to reach the recommended number of calories.

I have this translated simply as "recipes with a set number of calories", but am now having my final-read-through doubts. More the idea that calories are listed for each item in the menu?

I suppose the "joker" idea could be translated as "treat" - I think that's the word they use in diets where you can have two squares of choocolate if you've been good all week!

FYI: joker is the French term. It's the idea of a wild card. You can choose from a variety of "pleasure" items to top up your calorie count.

calorie conscious

The "calibrées" makes me think more of "well-balanced" meals, but perhaps "calorie conscious" might work.

Yes, I think your second thoughts are correct: it's the idea that you know precisely how many calories are in each option rather than the fact that the calory content is restricted. After all, not every one is trying to lose weight!

BTW, my husband and I came up with a good name for this after a particularly neurotic episode this weekend:

PTDPD (Pre Translation Delivery Panic Disorder). Can also be used for "Post" delivery panic (which is much worse).

This happened after I asked him to proofread a press release I had *already* delivered during a moment of existential angst.

For me "control" does not necessarily imply "restrict". It just means that the calories have been counted so you don't have to. Just like portion-controlled means that the portion sizes have been checked so that you don't have to worry about them...you just enjoy your meal!

neutral Tony M : In practice, 'control' is so often a euphemism for 'minimize' (especially in corporate-speak in terms of 'portion control'!), and it suggests the cook watches what they put in, which I'm sure isn't the case! // Just call me an old cynic ;-)

This is about a nutrition program, so why wouldn't they be watching what goes in? I stand by my answer. Think about the food pyramid, it is a way of "controlling" what you eat (but not necessarily reducing/minimizing)

Maybe, but my underlying idea is "let us do the counting so that you don't have to" (just sit back and enjoy your meal...sort of like me with my frozen diet entrees hot out of the microwave at lunch time...yum!)

nutrionally balanced recipes...

would work...gives the idea of balance which is not necessarily low calories but nutrionally worked out..ie some fat, but not too much, for example

I think the idea of calorie is not as important as balanced nutrition..and it works fine here.
