8.5.10.3 Lightning Protection System
General
The lightning protection system serves to minimize the effects of lightning strikes on structures, persons, and objects.
External Lightning Protection System
The external lightning protection system consists of an air termination system, a down conductor system, and an earth termination system.
The air termination system is designed to intercept lightning strikes. The air termination network on building roofs is constructed of interconnected steel, aluminium, or copper conductors.
Down conductors are constructed of continuously connected steel, aluminium or copper and are provided to conduct the lightning current to the earthing system.
In the case of skeleton structures, the metallic cladding (min. thickness to be observed) or the steel columns may serve as down conductors. Down conductors are connected to the ring earth electrodes around the buildings via the shortest direct path. The earth grid serves as the earth termination system for dissipating the lightning current to earth
