Discussion

Neil Ashby (asker) Aug 8, 2012:
Well I've got the singular right there in my text? ..... I think Lafayette has it right - it's kind of what I thought I was just unsure because at no other point in the text do they mention any other analyzers (redundant, in pairs, alone, primary, secondary or otherwise)
TechLawDC Aug 7, 2012:
Redundant analyzers (plural). Redundant analyzers (plural -- not "redundant analyzer").
This is a convention that I have never seen violated, in information technology or any other area of engineering. The understandable reason is that "redundant analyzer" would create confusion and give rise to more complex sentences.

Very acceptable in chemical engineering.
(Backup and tandem convey different ideas.)

Redundant suggest that both analyzers are operating at once. If they yield different results, more investigation is needed because it indicates that one of them has malfunctioned.

Note from asker:
Hi TechLaw, thanks for your input. In the second example/context that I give in my question how does a pair of redundant analyzers (from your description I understand there has to be two or more in the system, or the trm redundant wouldn't be used) fit in with the singular "analizador redundante"? Do you know if in English we use the single to apply to a pair? TIA

agree Lafayette Eaton : In the second case they are indicating that there is a second (redundant) analyzer.
