German term

„Singularität“ einer ersten technologischen Selbst-Referenz

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers (general)
This is from a text on artificial intelligence and its effects on mankind.
I know you can translate „Singularität“ as singularity but the phrase as a whole puzzles me.

Many thanks for your help!

the singular point at which technology starts referring to itself

The word as used does not refer to *the* Singularity, but a singularity. However, the text is about the technological singularity.

4c. Mathematics A point at which the derivative does not exist for a given function but every neighborhood of which contains points for which the derivative exists. Also called singular point.

Others[56] propose that other "singularities" can be found through analysis of trends in world population, world gross domestic product, and other indices. Andrey Korotayev and others argue that historical hyperbolic growth curves can be attributed to feedback loops that ceased to affect global trends in the 1970s, and thus hyperbolic growth should not be expected in the future.[57][58]
... Economist Robert J. Gordon, in The Rise and Fall of American Growth: The U.S. Standard of Living Since the Civil War (2016), points out that measured economic growth has slowed around 1970 and slowed even further since the financial crisis of 2008, and argues that the economic data show no trace of a coming Singularity as imagined by mathematician I.J. Good.[63]

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you! I didn't phrase it exactly the way you suggested but you are correct in your analysis of the word singularity in this context. Here is my version: ...a "singularity" where the technology first starts to become self-referential..."

Singularity

This is an AI technical term - see reference for more information
It refers to "itself" in as much as the term defines the point at which, when reached, AI becomes self-improving, thus escaping human control and becoming an uncontrollable "super intelligence".
