Spanish term

guantes tipo tornero

Spanish to English Science Safety Occupational Safety
This term appears on a list of personal protection items that employees should wear at an agricultural research lab.

I looked for the different kinds of gloves available, but I'm not sure what kinds of gloves they're referring to here.
Are these "puncture resistant gloves"?

Anyway, thank you in advance for any suggestions and ideas.

I would say leather safety gloves. https://safetygearpro.com/safety-gloves-types-uses/

@Giovanni Giovanni, do you know what kind of agricultural research goes on at this facility? That could make a big difference as to what kind of gloves might be good protection, & on the other hand, what kind of gloves might be dangerous to workers (getting caught in machinery,, or something like that).
Giovanni Rengifo (asker) Jan 30, 2019:
Explanation I checked with my client, and she says these are "guantes de cuero o carnaza.", but I've never heard the word "carnaza" before. I'd like to use "machine operator gloves", but I'd like to hear your opinions first.
Robert Carter Jan 11, 2019:
If operators are strictly warned against wearing gloves while working on a lathe, perhaps this is simply an in-joke by a bored technician in a laboratory where lathes aren't even used in any case.
I came across a couple of forums where people with experience in this area were emphatically against wearing gloves of any kind because they can drag the entire arm into the machine.
philgoddard Jan 10, 2019:
Maybe they're (say) thin latex gloves that would protect the operator from things like dirt and coolant, but would rip off easily if they got caught in machinery.
Thomas Walker Jan 10, 2019:
It may just be that the workers at this facility found available gloves that work well for them, even though they were designed & sold for an entirely different work situation?
Giovanni Rengifo (asker) Jan 10, 2019:
@Jessica Thank you so much for your input about this. I'm going to have to check with the client to be sure about this. as I believe "safety/protective" gloves might be too general here.
Giovanni Rengifo (asker) Jan 10, 2019:
@Elena That's true. It is strange, as it seems lathe operators are not supposed to wear gloves. Besides, as far as I know, there's no rotating machinery at the research lab where employees are required to wear gloves for handling bean seeds. This is confusing. I'll check with the client about this.
Jessica Noyes Jan 10, 2019:
When I Google "guantes de tornero" I see a variety of protective gloves used in several different types of work, most of them being snug around the wrist. I like Elena's theory about why they might be called "de tornero."
Elena Bailey Jan 10, 2019:
Well this is a strange one, because a "tornero" would be a lathe operator, and most OSH references in both Spanish and English note that gloves should not be used around rotating machinery.
Perhaps this is a mistake? Or could it refer to particularly well-fitting gloves that would not entail the risks gloves usually present when operating rotating machinery?

agree Jessica Noyes : or maybe "snug-fitting safety gloves"

Thanks, Jessica. Yeah, I think it would be a really good idea for the asker to include "snug-fitting", because that's exactly how they appear when I googled.
