In a crane hand book:
I cannot find anything relevant in German in the net to help - what type of warning lights are these?

aircraft warning light
Twinkling high in the cold December night air over central London can be seen a host of bright red lights, attached to tall cranes as a warning to passing aircraft.
Under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, any structure over 45 metres tall on a flight path or near an aerodrome must be fitted with a medium-intensity aircraft warning light. https://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2016/12/photos-red-crane-lights-...

boom/ signal lights
I'm a pilot. This sounds like it has to do with aerial refueling to me.
Note from asker:
Thanks, but they are on an earthbound crane, so I don't think refuelling is relevant. |
