German term

Gutachten vertreten

have served as an expert witness

and I myself have served as an expert witness in court providing expert opinions ...

Definition of Expert Witness

Expert evidence is admissible to furnish the court with information which is likely to be outside the experience and the knowledge of a judge or jury (Criminal Practice Direction V Evidence 19A Expert Evidence).

An expert witness can provide the court with a statement of opinion on any admissible matter calling for expertise by the witness if they are qualified to give such an opinion.

https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/expert-evidence

Many attorneys seek expert witnesses who have litigation experience in addition to their technical or scientific knowledge. In some cases, however, the most knowledgeable expert may be one who has never served as an expert witness before.

separate clauses

These two words appear in different clauses. One is vor Gericht vertreten and the other one, in the second part between the asterisks, is just saying how many there were. So she supervised or oversaw some of them (Gutachten ueberwacht) and 30-45 she did herself by appearing in court herself/himself.
**appeared in court myself, somewhere between 30 and 45 court expert opinions**

have delivered expert testimony

..between 30 and 40 times a year

Seems to me an idiomatic way of rendering this. Also, any translation of "vertreten" should probably be close to the German in tone and register and not too formal. I am not sure we've paid enough attention to that.

"Has delivered expert testimony and opinion on many substantial disputes."

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : In UK terms an expert doesn't "defend" his/her opinion and we would not use this expression

Hi AT, I can assure you he or she is in this position very often, not quite a 'defendant' but sometimes very much alike: 'vertreten' means more than just deliver one's expert testimony, it's defending it against criticism, be it by the court or lawyers...
