In the course of our program of developing integrated (intrinsic)
fluoroionophores we demonstrated that photoinduced intramolecular
charge transfer from the ionophore to the ð-conjugated system led
to release of the cation during the excited-state lifetime of the
probe,2 but the mean diffusion length of the cation is only 10 Å
for 1 ns,3 and the switching action is quickly reversed as the system
loses its excitation energy and returns to the original ground state

Penso che si riferisca alla posizione dell'atomo di carbonio attraverso il quale viene ottenuta la coniugazione.
Il carbonio alfa e' quello a cui e' legato il gruppo funzionale, mentre gli altri a seguire vengono distinti con beta, gamma, delta eccetera a seconda della posizione. Almeno, questo sarebbe quanto mi ricordo dalle mie lezioni di chimica.
