Fair trade tries to manage this tension for the wellbeing of marginalized groups, but because most of the campaigning for “ethicality” (Carrier, 2012, p. 29) that surrounds it focuses on the prices paid to farmers and artisans, the prices that shoppers pay for the fruits of these people’s labor tend to become a blind spot. The fair price is thus both a singular and a double entity, whose different component parts require a considerable “work of imagination” (Foster, 2006, p. 292) to be put back together, especially for consumers. Such difficulty raises questions for the idea that a reflexive consumer class has emerged in the affluent societies of Euro-America which can act as the vanguard of human rights promotion.
