That was 1972. The new movement was partly fuelled by attention
from the black and establishment press; as Cornbread’s activities were
reported, more people had the idea of making a name for themselves.
Writing spread to New York, where the New York Times did its first article
on the phenomenon in July 1971, featuring a young writer from Washington
Heights. ‘Taki 183 spawns Pen Pals’ ran the headline. Taki was
short for Demetrius, and 183 stood for the street he lived on. In fact he
was imitating another local teenager, ‘Julio 204’, who had begun tagging
the neigbourhood twenty blocks to the north. What made Taki different
is that he travelled around all five boroughs from Kennedy airport and
out to New Jersey, up-state New York and Connecticut.
