non sono esperto, ma mi verrebbe di dire così, comprare in base ai prezzi favorevoli che via via si trovano sugli scaffali (Nota dello shopper: il che presuppone un'ottima memoria, perchè bisogna ricordarsi quanto costava lo stesso prodotto in un altro market... :)

: se fosse così, direbbe "on a case by case basis" . "Case" qui non si traduce con "caso", ma con cassa/cassetta, quindi o è un riferimento specifico a qualcosa che si compra anche in casse (cassa di vino), o più genericamente alla quantità

Ho notato che molte occorrenze di "to buy by the case" si riferiscono alla vendita di vino e pertanto alla relativa possibilità di acquistarne delle casse.
Non so se nel tuo contesto puà starci... ad ogni modo sono d'accordo con Ottavio su "grandi quantità"
