Just a suggestion, but the meaning in English is this: (see wikipedia on Appaloosas)
While the original, "old time" Appaloosas also had a sparse mane and tail among its characteristics, today's "modern" Appaloosas may have thick,full manes and tails.

Here are some more terms used for the same thing - I find 'foundation', 'old type', 'old time', original' or 'old style' are all used.
'A "foundation" or "old type" Appaloosa is still sometimes seen, a slightly smaller, leaner version of the stock-type Appaloosa, considered to be closer in type to the original Nez Perce blood stock. Original or "old style" Appaloosas were highly regarded as rough range horses and many early ranchers and horse breeders used them in their programs.'
While the original, "old time" Appaloosas also had a sparse mane and tail among its characteristics, today's "modern" Appaloosas may have thick,full manes and tails.
