The English source material is from an elementary school English homework assignment. I want to translate it into Spanish for a Spanish class at the same school where the students are learning Spanish as a second language. Our school is located in San Diego, California and most of our students are likely going to be using their Spanish in the future in Mexico.
Prior to teaching Spanish in this school, I worked as a professional translator, but I am not currently doing any translation work for clients.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

conector (sintáctico)/marcador discursivo
En el primer caso que planteas, el conector va al principio de la frase; por eso resulta lógico llamarlo "starter" (creo que tb se llaman "connectors" en EN, ¿no?).
En el segundo aparece un espacio en blanco en un ejercicio clásico "fill the gap", y por lo que entiendo en ese espacio en blanco se colocaría también un conector/starter. Supongo que el enunciado del ejercicio sería algo como "fill the gap with a starter"; y lo que te confunde es que no está al principio... Lo único que pasa es que el "starter" se ha desplazado por cuestiones de estilo en el discurso.
En tu ejemplo, "The book" no es un conector ni parte del mismo, por supuesto, sino el sujeto. El conector (podría ser p. ej. "therefore") debería ir al principio de la frase: "Therefore, the book by J.R.R. centers on...".
No sé si me he explicado (y si te he ayudado).
