In relation to Islamic art, a couple of instances:

" ... mentre nella parte inferiore del corpo è presente un decoro a motivi apicati."

"La decorazione della ciotola, limitata alla parete esterna, consiste in una grande iscrizione in caratteri cufici con aste apicate e con alcune lettere terminanti in volute ..."

I've searched the word together with decoration, and a quick look at the links seems to confirm that a literal translation may be the one here... in the first link (and possibly in others) you can also see some photos

The letters are distinguished by the strangely uneven quality of certain horizontal strokes, particularly at the end of a word, which are elongated, thickened and then *tapered* to a sword-like point
