Discussion

Rachel Fell Mar 3, 2011:
Thank you for explaining the reasons for your chioce :-)
Lara Barnett Feb 25, 2011:
Helio Relating to he sun For example: http://soi.stanford.edu/results/heliowhat.html
The Italian is using this suffix to describe their planetarium. Does not necessarily have to be referring to any particular product or manufacturer.
Dr Lofthouse Feb 25, 2011:
..I'd just use 'orrery', as the planets depicted are given in the text
Dr Lofthouse Feb 25, 2011:
e.g. Planetarium = the Sun plus 9 planets (more
correctly 8 planets plus Pluto), whilst ‘Jovilabe’ = an orrery of Jupiter and some of its satellites.
Dr Lofthouse Feb 25, 2011:
No google hits at all. It is definitely NOT a 'heliograph' (see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliograph>)- agree it sounds like an 'orrery' from the description. Some distinction depending on the number of planets included is given in <http://www.sis.org.uk/bulletin/94/meccano.pdf>

orrery

See my reference comments.
Assuming there's no specific term for this in English, you'd need to make it clear that an orrery usually shows the whole solar system.

I don't think there is a specific term:

"Figure 3 is an image of [an orrery] made by James Ferguson, although less complicated by only showing Mercury, Venus, Earth and its moon.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: ""Planetarium" was also a correct option, but I chose the most common one. "Inner planets orrery" was a good idea but included Mars as well, which is absent in this orrery. So I simply used orrery and then specified which planets it included here (as in the Italian sentence). Thank you everyone for your precious help!"

Helios planetarim

"A complete fully-electric system for studying the planets and stars. Accuracy is at the core of the Helios with planets revolving at their correct relative speeds and the star dome showing all major stars and constellations for both Northern and Southern hemispheres. "

Sorry: typo

should read "helios planetariUm"
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I may be wrong, but I think you'll find Helios is a product name.

Maybe. But "helios" corresponds in many Italian words with the prefix, "elios". Eg. "Eliometro"=Heliometer / "Elioscopo"-"Helioscope" / "Elioterapia"="Heliotherapy" / "Eliotropico"="Heliotropic". The source text uses "Elio..." no reference to manufac.

Here's a picture

I'm almost certain this is the one in the text Tania is translating - it's in the Museo Montebelluna in Treviso. A working model of the whole solar system is called an orrery, but I don't know if there's a specific name for one showing only the inner three planets.
