Italian term

appartenenza gerarchica

Italian to English Marketing Computers: Software
Valutare l’appartenenza gerarchica dell’intestatario

Assess the hierarchical affiliation of the account holder?

This is one function of a software programme for managing sales promotions and, specifically, the re-evaluation and update stage.

Because the document has previously mentioned "product and customer hierarchies", I am tempted to think it is referring to the structure of the software programme, but another part of me is thinking in terms of "position in the management structure" i.e. status in the company.

Any ideas most welcome.

I don't understand you Phil Are you disagreeing with "it is a translator's duty to make every effort to fully understand the source text, so he/she can translate well"? You are always asking for more context (just as I do), then out of the blue you suddenly say that the context is not the translator's problem. I'm lost!
philgoddard Sep 12, 2012:
I disagree. We don't know what kind of hierarchy it is, but the customer almost certainly will. In fact Russell (who's gone quiet) will probably know from the rest of the document.
James (Jim) Davis Sep 12, 2012:
Hi Phil I think it is a translator's duty (problem) to make every effort to fully understand the source text, so he/she can translate well. In this case you need to do some research and find out what type of hierarchy it is. One simple way is to phone or email the author and ask. Obviously, your answer is probably the best given the context, but in my opinion it is Russell's "problem as the translator".
philgoddard Sep 11, 2012:
That's precisely what I said. We don't know what kind of a hierarchy it is, but we can't just give up on translating it. Russell asked us to translate "appartenenza gerarchica", and "position in the hierarchy" is how I'd render it with no other context.
James (Jim) Davis Sep 11, 2012:
Shooting in the dark I didn't expect Phil to say what he did. If you don't know who or what the intestatario is and what type of hierarchy it is, then you are shooting in the dark. Could be position in an organisation chart, or where in the pecking order.

position in the hierarchy

From the limited context (which is not your fault), there's no way of knowing what hierarchy is being referred to, software or management - but that's not your problem as the translator.
