Italian term
fosso
Italian to English
Tech/Engineering
Geology
I have seen fosso translated as a ditch/ stream/ channel/basin.
I have a document concerning landfills/dumps that talks about "fossa" this or that.
For example:
In prossimità dell’insediamento (quasi sul confine) è presente un fosso.
Gli affluenti del fosso, sono per lo più dislocati sul lato dx dell’alveo, quello opposto all’area dell’impianto.
L’area di che trattasi è impostata nella vallecola del fosso del teodolito...
Any ideas on the correct term?

ditch
I'd go for ditch - a fairly standard, generic terms and the primary translation of fosso (which also translates as trench or pit).

Small valley
Appears in Google but not very clear if it's a valley of a river or not.

natural rain water drainage ditch
In the country in Italy this is the fosso, a natural ditch created by rain water through the years
1 hr
channel
if it has an affluente I would presume its a channel
1 hr
stream, brook, torrent
depending on whether it is a man made ditch/channel (canale) or a natural "torrente" which dries out during the year
anyhow, given the bit where it states "Gli affluenti del fosso" I presume it is a "corso d'acqua" of some sort

trench
This is a word we frequently used in archaeology. May be useful also here.
