Dear all,
I'm an English teacher in Italy and my students asked me what is "schiacciapensieri" in English. This came up because we were talking about video games and one of the students showed a game app (Candy Crush) on her smartphone which she likes to play. Another student then pointed out that this game can be used to pass time in situations like commuting.
I replied with "to kill dead time", but they were't convinced and neither was I.
Can someone help me out please?
Thanks a lot.

mind-freeing game
The word should be "scacciapensieri" NOT "schiacciapensieri" but I'm guessing they said "schiaccia" because you "press" buttons with this game. However, I thing they were refering to a mind-freeing pastime / hobby / activity.
