Italian term

affine

Italian to English Bus/Financial Insurance Umbrella policy
• il coniuge, i genitori, i figli dell’Assicurato, nonchè qualsiasi altro parente od affine con lui convivente;

persons covered. affine...for now I have put "related person". I think a different word would have been used to mean dependants. In my opinion, parente covers this. Any additional insight as to the difference in Italian between affine and parente greatly appreciated.

Discussion

Beatrice T Nov 9, 2006:
DCypher (X) (asker) Nov 9, 2006:
what you suggest makes sense but this would mean a roommate is also covered by the policy (a company policy on behalf or workers)
Beatrice T Nov 9, 2006:

relative by marriage

Hi Paul,

The difference between "parente" and "Affine" is that a "parente" is someone you are directly related to whereas an "affine" is someone you are related to by marriage.

This is the De Mauro definition:

Paul - I've just learned something new - "affine" also exists in English:

affine
A noun
1 affine

(anthropology) kin by marriage

Note from asker:
relative, direct or by marriage (I'll check this but I think that is standard wording and works well )

esattamente, Paul:

consanguinei vs. affini/parenti acquisiti

Note from asker:
relative by blood (parente) or by marriage (affine)?
obviously my question is not about the final wording but the concept
