Italian term

esplosione notizia

Italian to English Marketing Internet, e-Commerce website design
the client is revamping the website and I have an excel file with instructions for the graphic/website designer, most of which are quite colloquial, brief

this is the context:

"AREA STAMPA / comunicati stampa
(FOGLIA) "esplosione notizia)"

I understand what they mean - you know when you pass over an item with your mouse and the item (text/picture) explodes, and comes up front with respect to the rest of the page - well, that would be it, but I'm just not sure how to put it decently

thanks!!

Discussion

reply to asker Of course, just as I thought. But how strange, I never pay Michael's answer at the time I suggested "roll over" in the discussion box. How strange!
ivanamdb (asker) Jan 31, 2012:
thank you Lara, you are absolutely right - the "trick" here is that the text is practically a list of instructions for the graphic designers, what they need to change on the website, how it needs to look, and at the same time this section is the "press area" of the website, which includes press releases, that's why the term "notizia", which may have misled people. I think Michael is spot on, as are you. in fact, it's called "rollover popout" in one of the links Michael provided - http://defunc.com/new/demo/popoutbox.html
thank you guys so much for helping me!
Lara Barnett Jan 31, 2012:
@ asker I am a bit confused about this question. Your question seems to relate to an instruction for a technical/computer related effect on a web-page. It sounds a lot like a "roll-over" effect which you get on passing a mouse/cursor over a particular webpage item, which then causes another box or window to spring up. However, the answers given all seem to relate to journalistic vocabulary. A news flash in UK is a quick TV or radio excerpt giving a condensed piece of information on an important news story. This term could not be used as a web designer's instruction. Do you want a journalistic term, or a more general web design term?

pop-up

If I've understood your description correctly, the term for this is 'pop-up'. They can variously be called rollover pop-ups, pop-up tooltips, pop-up information boxes, pop-outs, or even balloons, but in general pop-up is the most generic term. I've given several example sites that can demonstrate various forms and terms.
