Italian term

draghetto

Italian to English Marketing Marketing
I know that this is a type of fridge and the description I have of it is:
"hai presente i frigo vicino alle casse in un supermercato, quelli con le bevande (tipo "BURN"), o i gelati d'estate, in gergo questi si chiamano draghetti."
I was wondering if these fridges had a specific name in English like they do in Italian. Any ideas?
Many thanks to everyone in advance for your input!

Discussion

canguro (asker) Dec 10, 2008:
The actual "draghetto" in question contains the energy drink mentioned above and it is situated near the checkout although I don't have any pictures of it. I actually googled "draghetto" in Italian and found no link that took me to freezers or fridges of any sort.... just cute little dragons! Has anyone found any sort of fridge by typing the word "draghetto"? Just curious.
Since the fridge only contains this specific drink, I'm guessing it's not very large (it can't be too large if it is near the checkout). Given that in the description they say that these "draghetti" can also hold ice-creams, maybe it is an upright fridge with a plastic top, but that doesn't seem like a practical way to display drinks though does it?
"Freezer" sounds too big and bulky to be situated near the checkout.

cooler

I think they're normally called coolers.

drinks cooler
bottle cooler
display cooler
etc.

not sure if they have a nickname like in Italian though :)

Or do you mean the upright fridge/freezer (with plastic top) that sometimes sits next to the cash-out?

Yes, the two are definitely separate terms in English - a cooler for drinks and an ice-cream (display) freezer - bit of a mouthful but seems to be the standard term. There are also slimline versions, which might be suitable for your context. See:

agree Rachel Fell : I don' t think there's a nickname - and it depends whether it's for cool drinks or frozen ice cream

cooler / freezer / store freezer

In inglese non esiste una terminologia specifica come quella in italiano.
Cooler è il frigo per le bevande e altri alimenti, freezer oppure store freezer è il congelatore dove si tengono anche i gelati nei supermercati.

Note from asker:
This suggestion could be a last resort if I had no other way of translating the term, but given that there are terms like "cooler" and plain "fridge", i'd go with them first. thanks for the suggestion anyway! Much appreciated.
Oops, sorry! The note was for Arrigo de Angeli! Your suggestions are fine.

Many thanks for the input Roland! I ended up going with cooler because I think freezer brings to mind those bigger upright fridges where you usually find all the frozen foods in a supermarket. I choose Ivana's answer simply because she got in first! thanks again.

agree AeC2009 : what about "Draghetto" Store Freezer?

Grazie Arrigo. Sarebbe una bella idea ma non so come la prenderebbero gli inglesi ;-)

Thanks for the link and for your time! I don't understand what it is though from the picture.

neutral Rachel Fell : aren't these what I'd call a dredger - for scattering flour, for example? cf http://www.katiesreplacementchina.co.uk/epages/es111212.sf/e...

point-of-sale display chiller

something like that?

A point-of-sale display (POS) is a specialized form of sales promotion that is found near, on, or next to a checkout counter (the "point of sale"). ...Common items that may appear in POS displays year-round are batteries, soft drinks, clothing,....

The companies have been pushing point-of-sale freezer cabinet in stores, to compete with candy and gum at the checkout line. The idea is to get into non-grocery locations like gas stations and movie theaters.

Note from asker:
Many thanks for your effort as well as your links Rachel. Although the pictures were what I was talking about, your suggestion put a bit too much emphasis on the name of the fridge (in the context of my translation, it was what was "inside" the fridge that was important) and that's why I didn't choose it, otherwise it was perfect!
