I am undecided as to whether the term here means literally variation or the (pace of) change.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Context: from a piece in a furniture/interior design catalogue.
"Immaginare mondi ed esprimerli attraverso la finalità estetica e funzionale di un oggetto … la tentazione è grande, ma la variazione è travolgente, improvvisa, quasi a suggerire l’esaurimento del modo progettuale sostenuto nel corso di questi ultimi vent’anni."

I agree to an extent with the interpretation that Janice gives but don't think the word variation sounds right here. The text does seem to be saying that what came before has been put into question by this new way of designing an object as the artist's/designer's expression of a vision of the world which is personal and imagined rather than the world as it presents itself.
I think the writer is saying that this more artistic type of design does not necessary follow the traditional canons of the design process and that this change or shift is unexpected and quite revolutionary.
