SJLD Jun 16, 2009:
micro or macro The point is - if you read the literature - that "casting(-type) calcifications" are a type of microcalcification. Of course, the translation of "microcalcificazioni" on its own is "microcalcifications". But in the literature "casting" or "casting-type" is usually followed by calcifications rather than microcalcifications. It doesn't really matter. The important word here is "casting" which I provided in my answer at 30 mins.

Breast calcifications ... . There are two types:
Macro-calcifications are coarse calcium deposits in the breast. Macro-calcifications are harmless. They are not linked with cancer and do not need any treatment or monitoring.

Micro-calcifications are tiny calcium deposits that show up as fine white specks on a mammogram. They are usually found in an area of the breast where cells are being replaced more quickly than normal. Micro-calcifications are not usually due to cancer. In a small number of cases, however, a group of micro‑calcifications seen in one area (a cluster), may

a bug in the system I can't seem to add anything to my post. Anyway, either casting or casting-type is fine - both appeared in the refs I tried to add initially.

And this is from the first ref I gave (Seymour):
In terms of morphology, the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) classifies calcifications as either typically benign, intermediate concern, or having a higher probability of malignancy (5). Intermediate-concern calcifications are those that are amorphous or indistinct. Calcifications with a higher probability of malignancy are pleomorphic or heterogeneous (granular) or have a fine linear or fine linear and branching (casting) shape.

Google for casting or casting-type calcifications - the latter is much more frequent than casting-type microcalcifications. It is not necessary to specify "micro".

casting-type microcalcifications

Peer comment(s):

neutral SJLD : does this differ drastically from my answer?/I usually "fine-tune" in a peer comment. Microcalcifications ARE calcifications, period.

Well...microcalcifications are not the same as calcifications, and the point is in fine-tuning, isn't it? Yet, noone doubts your knowledge :)
