Italian term

Radio Scarpa

Sometimes it's written radioscarpa, sometimes "radio scarpa," in quotation marks, but without an explanation or additional context, as if everybody knew exactly what "radio scarpa" was. I don't, unfortunately. Is it just the radio? The radio operator.

This is from stories of veterans of the Italian army in Russia.

The rumour is [that small Russian attack etc]

"Radio Scarpa" is not actually a radio station. It's the unfficial gossip that passes by word of mouth, based on information picked up here and there, about what's happening.

neutral Mirella Soffio : you've missed the irony in the excerpt you quote...

galley radio

Just having some fun. When I was an officer in the RN the ship's cook knew more info than the Captain. We were convinced he had his own raqdio contact with the Home Office. On every ship this was known as "Galley Radio".
Note from asker:
Nice answer. Too bad they probably didn't have galleys in the trenches on the steppe!
