Here is the complete "sentence," spoken by a former conscript:
Da permanente al battaglione Ceva, nel 1938.
Garzanti tells me that a "soldato permanente" is one who is "non di leva o richiamato."
But the speaker, though not called back to service, is clearly a conscript. How then would you translate "da permanente"? I've been opting for "on active duty with" or "serving with," but am wondering if there's something better. Assigned to?

on active duty
From what I could gather with a brief research scan on the web. IATE gives "permanente" as "standing", which means permanent and active as in a "standing army", so I would translate it this way, myself. You might want to wait for confirmation or clarification, if you can.

On regular service at
esercito permanente = regular army, standing army
Servizio permanente = regular service.
By the way:
active duty
servizio effettivo
Servizio permanente = regular service.
By the way:
active duty
servizio effettivo
Note from asker:
I find "on regular service," and "as a permanent soldier" unidiomatic. There is also S.p.e. (servizio permanente effetivo), whence "da permanente," I believe. |
