I think that the "Green Ray" is referred to two things: first,in Italian is common to say that a light shade of green is "green hope", so it is automatically the colour associated with hope. The second is referred to the belief that the last sun's ray when the sun disappear beyond the sea is said to be green (also called green flash).
So the "green ray" put toghether two very poetic images, of calm and peace after an interior turmoil.
