Italiano term

tonico (here)

Da Italiano a Inglese Scienze sociali Scienze sociali, Sociologia, Etica ecc.
From hints on how to behave in a job interview:

Sii tonico; è importante una stretta di mano energica.

My only knowledge of tonico was in the sense of being fit, so I can't quite put my finger on this meaning.

Thanks.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I was really spoilt for choice here, and although this option may stray a little from the real meaning, I think it goes best in the context. Many thanks to everyone."

decisive

They're talking about having a firm handshake, so I reckon they mean "be decisive". No nonsense, show 'em you're not a limp-wristed wimp...

lively/energetic

I would imagine that the clue is in the description of the handshake. Since "tonico" means healthy/in shape, I would say something like "lively" or "energetic" would work.

If you use "energetic" for "tonico", you could use "firm" to describe the handshake.

be firm ....

A soft handshake demonstrates weakness, lack of confidence, lack of interest, and lack of masculinity. These are obviously the opposites of power and strength, important attributes in respected and successful people. I would suggest that if you do have a weak handshake, firm it up.
