I have been translating for Sky Italia since its birth in 2003 and I've used this term so many times I've lost count!

At the moment and even more so in the future, the events available on the digital terrestrial channels are prevalently pay-TV and therefore encrypted (soccer matches, movies). The digital terrestrial channels that do not have to be paid for are referred to as "unencrypted" and are merely a rerun of what is being shown on analog TV. In 2010 all television will have to be switched from analog to digital terrestrial. There will be the option to "pay" for encrypted shows or watch what is available "unencrypted" which means for free.

Come accade per la televisione analogica, oltre al canone TV non è necessario pagare alcun abbonamento. La TV digitale terrestre, in quanto sostitutiva dell'attuale TV analogica, sarà trasmessa per lo più "in chiaro" e quindi si potrà vedere gratuitamente. A partire dal gennaio 2005 sono stati attivati anche alcuni servizi a pagamento che permettono di vedere particolari eventi per mezzo di una carta prepagata da inserire nel decoder. Attualmente gli eventi disponibili riguardano le partite di calcio.
